The Search Engine War

cuil 300x197 The Search Engine War

For many years the whole search engine Market was going on dull without any major changes, when Google stood the number one position closely followed by Yahoo. There was nothing new only dullness was found over the years. Google was indexing more pages than anyone. Things changed with the changes in search with the introduction of new and specialized search engines lately. I have tried most of the new ones like bing, cuil, wolframalpha, Google squared labs .But none other than Google came to my mind when felt that I needed a search.

I had tried my luck with cuil when that came out but it was not up to the hype that it created. It presented search in a different format and also showed up with some surprising results but not good as Google.
Things quite changed in the past couple of weeks in the search space. The new entrant is the field was wolfram Alpha and Microsoft bing. Wolfram Alpha Computational answer engine was not to compete with Google in the border sense .But it promised to be champion with the figures and hard fact space.

Microsoft Bing was lunched as new revamped search engine which aims direct competition with Google squared and also had some features that Google lacked . Google squared had a whole new way of searching and displaying results.

I decided to research some searches with all the new and old guys in the space . Its my personal test not to prove anything but just to check them for my business.

The search I tried was with “Indian IPO’s for 2009″
Google Squared : Showed up with 7 results which had only the word IPO in it, none matched to the result, I needed.

Wolfram alpha : Thank God it has not learned what an IPO is “Wolfram|Alpha isn’t sure what to do with your input.” any ways it gave a suggestion link to IPO which showed the stock information of a company called IP group.

Cuil – Gave twelve results and none of them had any match unless with the word IPO.

Bing- showed up some results none was about 2009 IPO’s on the first page.

Seeing all this I decided to try our old horse Google and it did give me information and also had my Websites link as the fifth result and also it does suggest that Indian IPO for 2009, and if we click on that the first five Websites did not offer the correct information but it did give up the results that I was looking for within the first ten results.

Google entered the market on 15 sep 1997 and continued to be the most used search engine .
28 July 2008 saw the entry of cuil which was launched by former Google employes. It claims to have a larger Index than any others.
18 May 2009 bought in Wolfram Alpha ,It claim to do its searches to answer quires by computing from a set of curated and structured data.
28 May 2009 saw the entry of Microsoft Bing which claimed to be better search engine than Windows Live and MSN search.
3 June 2009 Google puts up Google squared , which promises more specific answers rather than a list of links.

I hope not to change the way I search, Google is still my cup of tea. Have a suggestion or comment just write down.
